DENTAL CROWNS & BRIDGES IN COLLEYVILLE, TX

Do you struggle with a tooth that has been damaged by trauma, infection, or decay?

Tooth pain, changes to the appearance of your smile, and problems eating the foods you love can have a major impact on your quality of life.

Fortunately, we offer a solution.

WHAT ARE DENTAL CROWNS?

Dental crowns are a general dentistry treatment used to help stabilize and strengthen teeth.

When a tooth has a large filling, it becomes weaker than when it was whole. A crown adds strength and helps prevent the tooth from cracking or breaking.

Root canal therapy causes teeth to become brittle and weaker because the nerve is removed. A crown on such a tooth protects it from further injury.

Badly discolored teeth or misshapen teeth are sometimes crowned, as well, to make them more esthetically pleasing.

WHAT WILL MY CROWN LOOK LIKE?

Dental crowns are made from a variety of materials. The purpose, placement, and cost of the crown are often part of the determination of what type of crown will be used:

  • Some crowns are made of stainless steel. These are relatively inexpensive.
  • Gold crowns are made of an alloy of real gold mixed with other metals. While expensive, this type of crown is known for its longevity.
  • Other crowns are made of porcelain fused to metal, resin, or ceramic. These types of crowns are most often used due to their esthetic appeal. They are created to match the color of your teeth and provide a realistic look to the tooth.

COSMETIC DENTAL CROWNS

Cosmetic crowns are used to keep your smile looking natural while protecting the tooth or teeth that are crowned. Porcelain fused to metal is one type of crown used in this instance. Ceramic or resin crowns are also used to keep a damaged tooth looking natural.

When there is a space between teeth caused by one or more missing teeth, sometimes a dental bridge is recommended. The two teeth on either side of the space are crowned and then connected by a bridge. It is a permanent device made to look like your natural teeth.

CARING FOR YOUR RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

Caring for crowns and bridgework may take a little extra care, but it is worth it when you consider the benefits of your teeth being protected from further damage, improving your ability to chew, and the restoration of a beautiful smile.

Crowns can usually be brushed and flossed the same way you would your natural teeth. Although the crown itself can’t develop cavities, it can build up plaque and tartar and affect neighboring teeth as well as your gum tissue.

Bridges require a bit more care. Because the replacement tooth sits above the gum line, you will need to carefully clean beneath it to clear away food particles, plaque, and bacteria to avoid infection and sore spots.
