Care for Common Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can range from minor, requiring general dentistry treatments, to serious, requiring more extensive work.
Lost fillings are common. When an old filling is dislodged due to chewing sticky substances like caramel candy, the situation could pose an urgent problem, but in most cases, rinsing with warm water and putting part of a cotton ball in the open space will be sufficient if you can be seen soon.
Losing a crown or cap is another common minor emergency. If it has not been swallowed, bring it with you to the dental office. Cleaning out the tooth and crown and reseating it are usually all that is required.
Broken dentures are also a reason people make emergency trips to the dentist. Call us if you drop your dentures or notice that they aren’t fitting quite right so we can assess and repair them.
More serious emergencies include toothache or trauma to the mouth. Infections, such as abscesses, are a serious dental emergency. If left untreated, they can have consequences throughout your entire body.
If you are experiencing severe tooth pain and there is swelling involved, you most likely have a serious problem. Infected teeth need to be treated without delay.
Dr. Shah will determine the extent of the infection and speak with you about your options. In such a case, getting the pain under control is a main priority.
Trauma: Loosened or Knocked-out Teeth
Trauma to the mouth is another serious emergency.
If a tooth has been knocked out or loosened, it is important to be seen right away. Rinse the tooth in warm water and do not touch the root. Put it in a small container of milk or salt water and bring it with you. Dr. Shah will advise you on whether or not the tooth can be restored in the socket.
We understand the anxiety and frustration of dental emergencies. We will give you the care and compassion you need while attending to your emergency. We take pride in providing our patients with excellent service and relaxing comfort no matter what their emergency may be.
